Irish eyes smiling for St. Pat's

Q: Is Ireland having any special events in 2010?

-- D. Singh Brampton

A: In addition to Dublin's annual St. Patrick's Festival (March 12-17), a couple of big events are happening this year.

Expect to see lots of fanfare in Enniscorthy. This town in County Wexford is celebrating its 1,500th anniversary. It was founded in the year 510 by St. Senan. An "Enlightenment Parade" and fireworks are planned for March 6.

Athlone Castle is marking its 800th anniversary. Built in 1210, the ancient stone structure overlooks the River Sharon and dominates the town centre. Open from Easter weekend to early October, special events are scheduled.

Q: I hate to pay single supplement fees on a cruise. Any advice is most helpful.

-- T. Vinegardten, Toronto

A: Cruise fares are normally based on double occupancy with a single supplement charged to solo travellers but sometimes those fees are waived. Ask your travel agent to do some research into which cruise lines have waivers.

I've heard that MSC Poesia and Avalon Waterways have deals. MSC Poesia has a deal on a seven-night Caribbean cruise booked by Jan. 31. Pre-tax prices start at $649 (cruise only) subject to availability.

Avalon Waterways has a "no single supplement" promotion on European river cruises. The cruise line reports there are still cabins available on several cruises departing between March and August. The special expires Feb. 16 and is subject to availability. You must quote Promotion Code 9AVSS when booking to receive the no-single-supplement offer. For reservations call a travel agent.
