Snowmobile evolution chronicled

VALCOURT, QUE. -- A new exhibit at the J. Armand Bombardier Museum looks at the evolution of the snowmobile over the past half-century.

The exhibit marks the 50th anniversary of the Ski-Doo, the vehicle that inventor Joseph-Armand Bombardier unveiled in 1959.

"In the 50 years that followed, the snowmobile underwent an amazing development from a basic utility vehicle to a very versatile recreational vehicle," the museum says.

"50 Years of Ski-Doo" runs for one year, until February 2010.

It includes numerous Ski-Doo models and a look at how mass production of snowmobiles began in 1960 at the Auto-Neige Bombardier factory in Valcourt, Que.

The company, which became Bombardier Inc. and is now based in Montreal, grew into a major manufacturer of aircraft and mass transportation equipment.

Bombardier died in 1964. The J.-Armand Bombardier Foundation, created by his family, opened the museum in 1971 in Valcourt, about an hour from Montreal in the Eastern Townships.
